‘Hitch’ and Stereotyping of Asian Men

Tuesday, March 15th, 2005

Last week I went to the movie theatre and watched the movie “Hitch” with Will Smith…

All in all I really liked the movie, it was very funny…

The only thing that really stood out of the whole thing was the beginning.

There were three couples featured where “Hitch” helped the guy to get a date and a succesful follow up…

- there was a white guy with a white girl
- there was a black guy and a black girl
- there was an asian woman… and guess who she was with…

Well, I’d like to add that I don’t have personally against the choices of every woman. Whoever a woman chooses is totally up to her and that’s what I think.
When it comes to movies though I think differently because I think that on one hand you could argue that a movie shows the “reality”. But on the other hand you can also say that a movie influences the public opinions and stereotypes.

So… my question is… why was there not an asian guy shown? Are asian guys still just invisible and should not be shown on screen unless they are Kung Fu fighters or servants?

So that small thing just pissed me off and still pisses me off. It made the whole movie so much different….

I wonder what your opinion is…
